Outside on the grounds (600 acres) is an enormous cross made out of evergreen trees that can be seen best from an airplane and a giant rosary made out of whitewashed stones. There are also numerous paths with hand carved rustic signs and crosses telling the martyr's stories.
In addition to the Martyrs, the life of Kateri Tekakwitha, the Lily of the Mohawks, is also celebrated at the Shrine. Kateri was born in 1656 in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, the daughter of a Christian Algonquin mother and a non-Christian Mohawk Chief. Her parents died during a smallpox epidemic (brought by the missionaries?) when she was four years old. In 1676, at age 20, she was baptized and devoted the remainder of her very short life to teaching prayers to children and helping the sick and aged. She died on April 17th, 1680 at 24 years of age. On January 3, 1943, she was declared Venerable by Pope Pius XII, and Beautified by Pope John Paul II on June 30, 1980. She is in line to be declared a saint.
The Shrine is also the center of devotion to Mary because it was on the grounds that the first recorded recitation of the Rosary in what is now New York State took place - on September 29, 1642.

That's really interesting Scott. I was thinking about how much "younger" California as I read about it.
Didn't mean to bring the blog to a standstill with my "Sunday drive" post. Was it the Christian content or just too long to read through? Meant it to be kinda funny and quirky, but maybe it was just boring. We gotta talk about something besides Granny and Granddad, as wonderful as that is. I'm interested in what people are like and what they do for work and fun. What is a controversy going on at work or at home? I want the details.
I wanted to thank Penny for getting pissed-off (about the "enthusiasm/exclamation point" comment) and letting us know something revealing about her life. I'l be sure not to make that observation again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
Also, I loved Caryn's comments about the issue she has when her husband makes changes in the house (better he should be a vassal in her domain?). No Rattet problem with control at Caryn's house, hmmmm?
Scott,
Your posts were interesting to me...my activities just seem so much more mundane! But I like to hear and see what you've been doing.
I was hoping Penny had taken some photos in Tuscany and would share.
Melanie,
What is more mundane than fixing a vacuum cleaner (any other words with two U's in a row?)? It works great, now, by the way. This weekend I'm going to build a wall to hide the makeshift staircase that a previous owner constructed up into the renovated attic (Ben's room). Building is not my forte, but.... I'll keep you posted on my progress.
Scott,
I'm impressed that you would tackle that project. Too bad we're not local, Greg's a very handy handyman. He always amazes me what he can do.
