Stacy motioned to me to come to where she was standing, at the lower end of steps leading to a side door at Harmony Mills. Harmony Mills was the largest and most modern clothing factory in the united states and sat on the new Erie Canal in the mid 19th century city of Cohoes, NY. Much of it has burned down and the rest has been a empty behemoth overlooking the Mohawk River. The canal, itself, long ago filled in to make a road. The mills is finally undergoing some renovation and looks to be loft living spaces in the future.
But, the door was opened so Stacy and I snuck in to take a look. The space is vast and the curved stairwell a beautiful distressed blue.
It was Sunday and it seemed empty until we heard banging around on the floor above. We made a bee-line back out into the street.
Not far is the town of Waterford, the home of the famous Tugboat Round-up. Every summer a collection of old and older tugboats gather for a festival near lock number two on the Champlain Canal, one of the canals still in use, though now mostly for pleasure boats. We drifted along the wharf resisting the fried dough and trinkets, but enjoyed looking at some tugboats.
