My son, Ben, spends Christmas Eve with his mom's family. For many years, I spent Christmas Eve with my Jewish friend, Mark, going to a movie and then eating out in a Chinese restaurant filled with Jews. Truly, this is a time when Jews feel the diaspora and form mini Shtetls around tables of Kung Po Chicken.
Mark has been in a relationship with Lucy for a couple of years, now, and they spend Christmas Eve together (she is not Jewish). So, Last night, Lucy invited me to join them at her house, along with her stepson and his girlfriend. Stacy and I have had a guest for a couple of days, Joe, an old classmate of hers who has recently separated from his wife and has no other family. So Joe and I went to Lucy's.
Had a lovely time sitting in front of a fire with wine and banter, and then a light dinner and more talk. A lovely evening (though I missed the Kung Po Chicken).

Jenny & Chris alternate holidays each year between the two families. This year was our year for Thanksgiving; Christmas with the Parkers. My cousin (on my mother's side) Barbara and her husband always come at Christmas. So we had a small group including Greg, me and Joshua and my cousins. It was very nice. Our tradition is to have buffalo wings and 7-layer dip on Christmas Eve and a nicer meal the following day, which was Prime Rib. (I'd pretty much be banished if I didn't do the buffalo wings.)
Anyway, Jenny had invited us to come up the week between Christmas & New Year for a visit and we had planned to do that. Joshua was on vacation with a few days unplanned at the end of it so he was able to join us. We were so glad that we were already planning that visit when Jenny lost the baby. It was so good to have our family together, cozy and warm in Jenny & Chris's house, rainy & cold weather outside. We stayed from Sunday until Wednesday and it was a very good visit.
Unfortunately we brought home a "souvenir" by catching a cold. Thankfully no obligations whatsoever this weekend has allowed us to just rest and get over it.
