Yesterday and today, I was wide awake at 4 AM. It made no sense lolling about in bed. When I slipper padded (nothing worse than cold linoleum underfoot first thing) to the kitchen to turn on the coffee maker, I discovered that the new florescent fixture ("thinner", rather than "thinnest" model), that I screwed on under a cabinet over where we keep the coffee maker, had a built in nite-lite. This morning at 4, I didn't have to switch on the scald-the-retina ceiling light, since the the nite-lite in the bathroom and the new nite-lite in the kitchen enabled me to aim accurately and turn on the coffee maker.
I sat on the porch with my coffee and a book and watched last night turn into today. Chilliest morning in a while. Put on a sweatshirt over my sleep t-shirt (for some reason, I only own pajama bottoms without the tops). Fall is not far. The paper-boy (paper-deliverer?) trotted by just as the sky turned lighter than the neighbors roof, but the street light was still casting shadows. Not a boy, more like a young man in his early twenties. He skipped us, but I heard the rolled newspapers fwack the walk in front of both houses on either side of ours.
I read the newspapers on-line. When I mention this to friends, they say that they prefer a newspaper made out of paper. Sometimes on Sundays, I buy a paper paper and enjoy spreading it out and listening to the sounds it makes while I'm eating a bagel with cream cheese.

4 AM?? UGH! Why are you waking up so early? Is something bothering you? If you had to be up so early, I'm glad you had such a lovely time on the porch watching the sun come up.
I watch a lot of design & decorating shows on HGTV (cable tv channel) and one designer that I really like always installs under the counter lights in kitchens. Trés chic!
Melanie,
I'm a morning person anyway, though 4 AM is a wee bit too early even for me. Is something bothering me? I wasn't trolling for that question when I wrote the post, but since you asked, I get to whine some more. Well, let's see:
A) The bank is threatening to foreclose on Ben's mom's estate property and the estate's attorney, real estate agent, and building manager are all comatose. Carol's family, who is supposed to be handling all this, are out to lunch. I am trying desperately to stay on the sideline so not to have everything end up in my lap. I'm already overwhelmed with being in charge of Carol's over 200 paintings (photographed 117 for documentation last Sat) and cleaning out twenty years of her studio. Remember, this is a woman I have been divorced from for over a decade. Her studio and home is in a loft/factory that we purchased together early in our marriage and way too full of memories.
B) Ben is going off to college next week.
C) Ben, who is prone to cardiac arrests especially when woken abruptly from sleep, is moving into a freshman dorm. Freshman dorms are not always the most sanguine of environments. In addition, the dorm has fire alarms whose job it is to wake people abruptly from sleep.
D) I start teaching a week from Monday.
As a smart person said, "When you meet someone, treat them kindly because they are in battle." I know that everyone has plenty to worry about. Thanks for listening.
Scott,
You certainly do have weighty things on your mind. Don't call it whining, a person needs to share their burdens with people who care. I send you a hug.
